The Chrome Corundum Block

The chrome corundum block is made of aluminum oxide and chromium oxide. It has high refractoriness, high strength, good thermal shock resistance, strong erosion resistance and good resistance to erosion, abrasion, corrosion and spalling. It is already used in the metallurgy, glass, carbon black and petrochemical industry.

The binary phase diagram of Al2O3-Cr2O3 shows that, Al2O3 and Cr2O3 can form a continuous solid solution without eutectic mixture produced. Thus, Cr2O3 is added into the high purity corundum material. No matter how much is added, it will not reduce the fire resistance of the material, but improve the fire-resistant properties of the material. The refractoriness of chrome corundum block (>1790℃) and softening temperature (>1700℃) under load is better than the high purity chrome products.
 
Its cold compressive strength is generally 70-100MPa. The cold compressive strength of high-performance chrome corundum blocks is generally higher than that of corundum block. This is because Al2O3-Cr2O3 solid solution is formed between the particles-particles and particles-fine powder during the firing process. The solid solution connects the articles and powder together like bridges and greatly improves the strength of the material. 
 
According to reports, when 10%-66% Cr2O3 is added into corundum, the thermal shock resistance of the material increase with the decrease of Cr2O3. 
 
The solubility of Cr2O3 in coal gasification slag (SiO2-CaO-based) and a variety of molten glass is smaller than the solubility in other oxide materials. Thus, Cr2O3 or refractories containing Cr2O3 has good resistance to steel slag, non-ferrous metallurgical slag, coal gasification slag, oil and gas slag and a variety of molten glass. 
 
The viscosity of Cr2O3 melt or liquid generated by the reaction between Cr2O3 and slag is bigger than that of other low-melt products. This will prevent the penetration of the molten slag into the brick along the capillary pores and avoid spalling due to the formation of the metamorphic layer. 
 
When used in the steel industry, chrome corundum block has a longer service life than that of chrome block. When used in the non-ferrous smelting industry, the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of chrome corundum block is much better than other bricks. In the petrochemical industry, in large and medium-sized fertilizer plants, due to the high temperature (1350~1450℃) and high pressure (3.1-8.53MPa) in the long term, strong reducing atmosphere (CO + H2 + CH4) and the large airflow speed (about 10ms-1), the lining refractory materials are subjected to more serious erosion and damage, so the lining refractory materials is demanding. 
 
High-performance chrome corundum block has high density and strength and has better anti-air scour capability and wear resistance than corundum block. The introduction of Cr2O3 into corundum block can make changes in the quality of corundum block and greatly improve the corrosion and slag resistance and penetration resistance and the service life of chrome corundum block in the gasifier.
