Corundum brick is a type of white refractory, but there are always iron in the brick, which will colors the brick. It is widely used in the porcelain industry, paper industry, rubber and plastic industry, metal industry, chemical industry and lacquer industry.
Remove The Iron From Corundum Bricks By Reduction Method
One of the ways to remove the iron from corundum bricks is the reduction method.
1) Hydrosulfite reduction method
This method requires strict control on acidity and temperature and fast opration since it is easy to be dispersed and invalid. Since corundum bricks bleached by hydrosulfite are easy to become yellow again, chelating agents such as oxalic acid are added.

2) Acid-soluble hydrogen Reduction method
In order to remove Fe2O3 from the corundum bricks, it is necessary to add some reducing agents to acid solution. Aluminum or zinc powder are added as a reducing agent in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, oxalic acid and other media to generate hydrogen. Hydrogen will reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ which is soluble and can be removed with the filtrate.
The acid has two functions: a. as a solvent, has a substitution reaction with Fe2O3, which makes insoluble Fe2O3 become soluble Fe3+; b. generates hydrogen by reastign with active metals.
For coal-corundum bricks with a high content of iron (>2.10%) and low whiteness (70 degrees), the only way and sintering can remove the iron and carbon which can increase the whiteness.
