Performance of Chrome Corundum Block

The raw material of chrome corundum block is made up of alumina oxide and chromium oxide by a certain proportion, and form a kind of solid solution through high temperature. Chrome corundum block is produced by special refractory material production process which makes the block have the features of high refractoriness, high strength, good thermal stability, strong resistance to corrosion, crushing resistant and abrasion resistance.

1. Performance analysis of chrome corundum block
 

A. Refractoriness property
From the phase diagram of Al2O3-Cr2O3, we can conclusion that Al2O3 and Cr2O3 can form a continuous solid solution which contains no low eutectic material. Therefore, adding Cr2O3 into the high purity corundum material, regardless of the amount, will not reduce the fire resistance, but will improve the performance of the material.

 

B. Strength
The cold crush strength of high purity corundum block is generally 70~100MPa, however, chrome corundum block is more than 150MPa which is obviously higher than corundum brick. This is due to the process of sintering, between the particles and particles, the particles and fine powder, the fine powder and fine powder are formed Al2O3-Cr2O3 solid solution which can connect the particles and fine power like a bridge and improve the strength of chrome corundum block greatly.

 

C. Thermal stability
According to data reported, adding Cr2O3 into corundum block, when the content of Cr2O3 is among 10%~66%, the thermal stability decreases with the increase of Cr2O3 content, which means that chrome corundum block has stronger thermal stability with lower Cr2O3 than that with higher Cr2O3.

 

D. Slag corrosion resistance
Solubility of Cr2O3 is much smaller in coal gasification slag and various glass melts than in other oxide materials. Therefore, refractory materials containing Cr2O3 have the good ability of slag corrosion resistance. Viscosity of liquid phase generated by Cr2O3 and slag reaction is larger than other low melt viscosity which prevents the melting slag penetration along the capillary pores, avoids the formation of the metamorphic layer and produce structural spalling.

 

2. Application of chrome corundum block
 

In the iron and steel industry, the service life of chrome corundum block is more than one time than corundum block; in non-ferrous smelting industry, the abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance of chrome corundum block is obviously superior to other brick species. Chrome corundum block is mainly used in areas that require high abrasion and temperature resistance, such as gliding rail bricks in steel pusher metallurgical furnaces, the tapping platform (tapping spout) style walking beam furnaces, and also as the interior for destructors, In the linings of carbon soot furnace and copper smeling furnace tapping platform of rolling mill furnace, reheating furnace skid rail.
